Hello everyone! Its time for a Thailand Update, Thailand was very fun, I traveled with my two friends Emily and Malia, we went to Chaing Mai (the religious center of Thailand), Phuket (the super touristy beach town- where the movie “the beach” was filmed with leo decaprio), and then Bankok. I don’t feel like writing too much about the experience, but what I can say is – it was very hot, the people were very nice, and the rural parts were absolutely beautiful. Here are some pictures and brief explanations of them…..
Me, Emily and Malia at the airport in Bankok flying to Chaing Mai.
A picture I took from the bus ride from where we ported to Bankok
This little boy tried to sell us flowers, but we said we didn’t want any and paid him three times as much as he wanted for one bundle- he was asking like 10 cents for a dozen roses….and then he kept coming back and trying to give us like six bundles of roses, finally we look one and he was happy haha. Very cute.
Me and Malia with our flowers, by the way this all happened while we were sitting at an outdoor bar, which we didn’t realize was a gay bar until woman started buying us flowers haahaha.
The next day in Chaing Mai Malia and Emily were eating lunch and I wasn’t hungry so I was just walking down the street to see what there was, and I ended up talking to this monk for about 20 or 30 minutes on the street, I told him he should come to the resteraunt to meet my friends but he said it would look bad because monks are only allowed to eat two meals a day but that he would wait outside the resteraunt. He was so nice and spoke very good English. He look us to his monastery he was staying at, and introduced us to his friends. I told him I missed my family, and he asked me how long it had been since I had seen them, I told him a month and he started laughing, it had been 8 years since he had seen his family (he was our age) because he had been studying for the last 8 years, he was visiting Chaing Mai to see if he would continue his studies there (he was originally from louse). Anyways, we learned a lot and we talked and stayed there for about an hour. They were so nice to us and it was probably the coolest part of my trip.
After that we went to the famous Golden Pagoda….
There I am, that’s a new dress I bought in Thailand for two dollars. I think its pretty cute- I didn’t even try it on haha.

Thai children dressed up to make money….we of course gave them some….I mean…look at those faces.
The pool at the hotel we stayed at in Phuket, the picture doesn’t do it justice.
The steps leading up to our room
Its really sad that we were in Phuket during the rainy season (I don’t know whether you have heard about the typhoon that just hit China and Vietnam –they had to evacuate people!), because you can tell how beautiful the beaches would be if it was sunny.
These were the pictures of me and my friends at the hotel before we went out the the infamous club/bar “Bananna” (which had nothing to do with bananas haha, but there was foam and bubbles and it was a very wild night, I didn’t take my camera (probably a good thing) but here are the pictures from before, we were out until 4 am that night….it was one crazy night.

The next day me, Emily, and Malia went elephant riding, hiking through a jungle to see a waterfall, and went kayaking. It was a really fun day!
Maila getting strapped in, she was the first one to go, and was a little nervous
These pictures were from our hike through the jungle and the waterfall….it was beautiful, and I wish we could have swam in the waterfall and we would have if it weren’t for the leeches, parasites, and poisonous snakes in the water, it was very hard not to jump in- it was like 100 degrees and muggy outside.

Well I have to go! My internet minutes are a race against time, I only have 20 minutes left! Thanks for all the cards/letters/e-mails/comments! I miss you all tons!
Wish me luck in India!
From August to December of 2007 I will embark on a journey around the world through Semester At Sea. This is a blog for my friends and family to read about my travels and experiences abroad! Wish me luck!

Leeches! Parasites! Poisonous snakes! Well, that never stopped you before. Get back in the water! It made me thik of that Green Beret hike we took to the waterfall on Kauai - similar mud as well. Wow, you really had quite a trip there in Thailand. I really liked the shots of you on the elephant. That hike you took looked fairly muddy. The rainy season is right though. Phuket looks very pretty, and I can imagine it in the sunlight, well, I can because we have already watched Leo's 'Beach' movie. Can't wait to hear the full story on the monks - that sounds like the highlight of the whole trip. Hard to beleive that he hadn't seen his family in 8 years. How big was that (emormous) reclining Buddha? Their art has such grace. Wow. Back to the ship and onward to Chennai (Madras). Much love, Dad
